Movie Night Picker helps a group of friends agree on a film. This page explains what information it collects, why, and what happens to it.
The short version: it collects as little as it can, it doesn't track you or show you adverts, and it never sells your information or shares it for marketing.
Who runs this
Movie Night Picker is a small, independently run site (“we”, “us”). You can reach us at picktonightsmovie@gmail.com.
If you sign in as an organiser
Organisers sign in with Google. When you do, Google shares with us:
- Your Google account ID — a number that lets us recognise you next time.
- Your email address.
- Your name — used only to suggest a username the first time you sign in. We don't store it.
We also store the username you choose and the events you create: their names, categories, the names you enter for participants, and their settings.
We never see your Google password, and we don't receive your contacts, files or anything else in your Google account. We don't keep any key that would let us act on your Google account after you've signed in.
If you're taking part in a movie night
You don't need an account. For each event you're invited to, we store:
- the name the organiser entered for you;
- the films you suggest, and the votes or rankings you make.
The organiser can see whether you've finished each step, but not which films you suggested or how you voted. Results are shown as totals for the whole group.
Films and posters
Film titles, descriptions and posters come from TMDb. When you search for a film, our server sends TMDb the words you searched for — not who you are. Posters are loaded straight from TMDb's image servers, so, as with any website that shows pictures hosted elsewhere, TMDb receives your IP address when your browser fetches them. TMDb's privacy policy covers that.
Cookies
We only use cookies the site needs to work. There are no analytics or advertising cookies.
- Sign-in cookie — keeps organisers signed in, for up to 30 days.
- Sign-in security cookies — exist for a few minutes during a Google sign-in, to protect it from being tampered with.
- Form security cookie — stops other websites submitting forms on this one.
Nothing else is stored in your browser.
How we use your information
Only to run the service: to sign you in, show you your events, run the vote and show the results. We don't use it for advertising or profiling, and we don't sell it. We process it because it's necessary to provide the service you've asked for, and to keep the site secure.
Information from Google
Movie Night Picker's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We use it only to sign you in and recognise your account. We don't use it for advertising, we don't sell it, and we don't share it with anyone other than the hosting provider that runs the site.
Who else handles it
- Railway hosts the website and its database.
- Google handles organiser sign-in.
- TMDb supplies film information and posters, as described above.
We don't share personal information with anyone else.
How long we keep it
Accounts and events stay until they're deleted — nothing is removed automatically. To have your account, an event, or your part in an event removed, email us at picktonightsmovie@gmail.com and we'll delete it.
Our hosting provider also keeps logs for a limited time, for security and troubleshooting: the site's own, which note things like when an account is created and under what username, and standard server logs such as IP addresses and which pages were requested.
Your rights
You can ask to see the information we hold about you, have it corrected, have it deleted, or object to how we use it. Email us at picktonightsmovie@gmail.com and we'll respond within a month. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
Security
Everything is sent over an encrypted connection. Invite links are long and random — but anyone who has one can use it, so share each link only with the person it's meant for.
Children
Movie Night Picker isn't intended for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we'll update the date at the top. If a change affects how we use information you've already given us, we'll say so on the site first.
